A Young Territorian's Global Impact: Peter's Journey to COP29

The value of being there in person was the people that I met. And also understanding all the stuff, all of the aspects that aren’t broadcast that you can only see with your own two eyes. So some of the things that I got to see were the sort of side discussions that happened during the Oval negotiations, people switch off the mics and talk to people, in their own team, for example, about something within the negotiating schedule.
— Peter Susanto

At just 17 years old, Peter, a bright young Northern Territorian, has already made significant strides on the global stage. In 2024, he was named NT Young Australian of the Year, recognising his outstanding contributions to the Northern Territory community. Later in 2024, he had the extraordinary opportunity to represent Australia at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

COP29 brought together world leaders, climate scientists, activists, and policymakers to address the urgent issue of climate change. As one of four Australia's youngest delegates, Peter gained firsthand experience of the complex negotiations and discussions that shape global climate policy. He was able to witness the passion and dedication of individuals from around the world who are committed to addressing climate change.

Beyond the conference halls, Peter was inspired by the delegations from various countries. These activists, many of whom are on the frontlines of climate change, brought a sense of urgency and innovation to the conference. They advocated for ambitious climate action and held leaders accountable for their commitments.

Peter's journey to COP29 is a testament to the power of youth and the importance of seizing opportunities. His experience at COP29 has further fuelled his passion for creating a more sustainable and equitable world. As he continues his studies in clinical science, he aims to combine his passion for healthcare with his interest in climate change and sustainability.

Peter, a young Australian, recently had the extraordinary opportunity to attend the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Better and Fairer Schools Agreement

Peter was at the signing of the Better and Fairer Schools Agreement, a landmark achievement that secured full funding for schools in the Northern Territory by 2029. This milestone was made possible through collaboration with Education Ministers (the then Chief Minister Hon Eva Lawler MLA, and then Hon Mark Monaghan MLA) and the Federal Education Minister (Hon Jason Clare MP).
